When I started taking natural skincare seriously, I realized something that genuinely surprised me. I was carefully reading the labels on my creams, my oils, everything I put on my skin. But I had never once thought about what I was breathing in every evening when I lit a candle. That small ritual, meant to be a moment of self-care, was potentially doing the exact opposite of what I intended. Today, I want to share everything I learned, and how it shaped every single decision behind the Fleuris-Toi candles.
The vast majority of candles sold in grocery stores and big box retailers are made with paraffin wax. It's inexpensive, easy to produce at scale, and holds fragrance well. On the surface, it makes sense for a business. But here's what no one mentions: paraffin is a byproduct of crude oil refining. And when it burns, it releases compounds into your home that are similar to diesel exhaust.
Formaldehyde, a known respiratory irritant
Toluene and benzene, recognized as nervous system disruptors
Fine particles that penetrate deep into the lungs
Black soot that settles on your walls, furniture, and inside your airways
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that degrade your indoor air quality
What makes this even more concerning is where you typically light a candle: your bedroom or bathroom, the least ventilated spaces in your home. The exact places where you go to unwind. Where you breathe the most deeply.
What research says about phthalates
Classified as endocrine disruptors. They mimic or block your natural hormones
Linked in multiple studies to fertility issues
Potentially associated with developmental concerns in children
They accumulate in the body over time with repeated exposure
The unsettling part is that they're invisible and odorless. You light your candle, enjoy the scent, and meanwhile your body quietly absorbs what it shouldn't have to.
"The goal isn't to give up life's simple pleasures. It's to make sure they're actually good for you."
Wicks don't get talked about enough, but they make a real difference. Some inexpensive wicks contain a metal lead core to help them stay upright during burning. When lit, they release lead particles into the air. Lead is a neurotoxin with no known safe level of exposure, especially for children. It's a quiet detail with consequences that are anything but quiet.
When I started developing our candles, I gave myself one simple rule: every ingredient had to be something I would feel completely comfortable breathing in my own home, every single evening. That filter guided every choice, every supplier, every reformulation along the way.
All of our candles are poured in 100% plant-based soy wax. Soy burns at a lower temperature than paraffin, which means a slower, cleaner burn and a candle that lasts significantly longer. Less soot, fewer pollutants in your air, and a gentle, consistent scent throw from the very first light to the last.

We use fragrances in our candles, and we stand behind that choice completely. The right scent can transform a room, soften a hard day, and create an atmosphere that feels entirely your own. But every fragrance we use is rigorously selected to be phthalate-free and validated for safety at combustion. We read the technical data sheets, we ask demanding questions of our suppliers, and we turn down anything whose safety profile gives us even the slightest pause.
Our wicks are 100% natural cotton. They deliver a clean, stable flame, won't blacken your walls, and reflect the same standard we apply across our entire line: nothing should be in your candle that shouldn't be in your home.
At Fleuris-Toi, we wanted to create candles with real character. Each fragrance is a carefully crafted scent synergy. A blend designed to create something unexpected and truly one of a kind. Not the generic scents you find everywhere. Combinations that surprise you, that evoke an emotion, a moment, a feeling. Every candle has its own identity, and that's exactly what we intended: for you to find the one that becomes a signature in your space.
And because we love keeping things fresh and exciting, we release limited edition collections every season. Candles designed to capture the essence of a specific moment in the year, available for a limited time only.
A Fleuris-Toi candle should be just as beautiful to look at as it is to smell. We put as much care into the visual as we do into the formulation. Every design element was crafted to be clean, distinctive, and to integrate naturally into your space. The kind of object you set down somewhere and it immediately becomes part of the room.
USAGE TIPS
Trim the wick to about 5mm before each use to prevent soot and extend the candle's life
On the first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the vessel to prevent tunneling
Gently ventilate the room after 2 to 3 hours of burning, even with a clean candle
Avoid drafts that cause the flame to flicker and produce more smoke
Never leave a burning candle unattended
"At Fleuris-Toi, taking care of you starts with the air you breathe at home."
